Hello world! Starting a Business

by | Jun 3, 2018 | Business | 5 comments

Seems funny to be typing up the first post for this site since I’ve actually been in business for just over seven years. In the web presence space, even. What’s the old saying? “The cobbler’s kids have no shoes.” Does anyone even know what a cobbler is, anymore? I hear cobbler and my first thought is, “Apple or peach? Or is it a berry-based cobbler? Mmmmmmm…cobbler.” But I digress.

Hello World!!

Yes, this is my “Hello World!” post after only seven years in business. It seems that having a good bit of work to do and bordering on being a perfectionist has kept me from doing the very thing I teach and preach to others. But no more. Today, it begins. And now I realize that the earlier analogy breaks down a bit. I’m not cobbling shoes together for my kids. They get shoes every few months at the rate they’re growing. It’s time for the cobbler to cobble his own shoes.

Starting a Business

Starting a business is hard. But it’s also one of the best things I’ve ever done, and I think it can be for you, too. They say experience is the best teacher. I’ve never known who “they” are, but I do know they’re right. I see the principle proven every day as the father of three strong-willed, independent, boys who would rather not hear the advice of their old dad. Instead, they often do their own thing and have their own experience and learn it for themselves in a way that sticks. Mostly. Again, I digress.

What to Expect

Here on this blog, I’ll be writing about small business, often the “solopreneur“, and technology. Yes, the topic of technology is broad, but so are my interests in it. However, to give you an idea of what you can expect to find here, I’ll say this: as a small business owner, or solopreneur myself, I’ve had a lot of experience over the last few years with a variety of apps, platforms, hardware, software, online, offline, and everything in between when it comes to finding and implementing tools to help me run my business. Because of that, I’ve put together a long list of resources, most of them really good, that might help save you some time as you get started or as you grow your business.

Here’s a partial list of some of the topics I’ve broken down and about which I’ll be writing:

  • Business Resources
    • Collaboration and Project Management
    • CRM
    • Domain Names
    • Events Management
    • Legal
    • Marketing and Advertising
      • Email
      • Marketing Automation
      • SMS
      • Affiliate and Referral Programs
    • Planning and Strategy
    • Proposal Apps and Software
    • Social Media Tools
      • Social Media Management Platforms
      • Chatbot Platforms
    • Web Tools and Services
      • Domain Registration
      • Website (WordPress) Hosting
      • Podcast Tools and Hosting
      • Video Hosting
  • Design Resources
    • Colors
    • CSS
    • Fonts
    • Icons
    • Logos and Branding
    • Stock Photography
    • Templates
    • Website Planning
  • Educational Resources
    • Life Planning and Goal Setting
    • Marketing
    • Copywriting
  • Content Creation
    • Production Resources
      • Audio
      • Video

I think I have some good insight into a lot of these things that I’ve been exploring, learning, and using to build and grow my own business these last six years. My hope is that you can learn from me, that I can save you a bit of time, money, and heartache and help you grow your business. Hopefully, if you do it right, that will lead you a life of freedom, impact, and, ultimately, a legacy you can be proud of.

So…time to put ’em on and lace ’em up. The cobbler’s cobbling some shoes, er, content.
